Still no heating…

On Monday, after a weekend of no heating or hot water (well, I have a kettle) I managed to speak to the appropriate person at Criterion Asset Management who said she would organise a plumber straight away and have them call me to arrange access. Now, I’m not so naive as to expect a call back the same day, I have seen on the TV that there is a national plumber shortage after all, but it is now Wednesday and I have heard nothing. I left a message for appropriate person at CAM yesterday afternoon, but surprise surprise, she has not bothered to return my call.

So good people, I ask you this. Can I legally (‘cos I know morally I can ;)) organise my own plumber and just take the cost out of my next rent direct debit(s)? I shall give them until after lunch, I think, before I start calling up appropriate people’s managers.

No, if it’s a direct debit, they have control over how much they take. If it’s a standing order, you may be in breach of contract to cancel it in order to make a one-off payment. I would fax them detailing exactly what you are going to do and how you intend to recover your money if they fail to do their job. Then ring them every hour until they acknowledge your fax. Then firebomb their office.
