Cyclists and road laws

<rant> I was pleased to read this article on the BBC News website today. It annoys me that many cyclists think that they can jump red lights, ride on the pavement and generally do what they want. They can’t, they are covered by the same laws as cars in these regards. I stop at red lights (often trackstanding for my own amusement) and only ride where I shouldn’t when I’m riding urban (which is itself is illegal and if I get fined I have no grounds to complain). Hopefully these cyclists will eventually learn to be responsible riders, but until then the police should be fining them – the cheek of this guy complaining its a waste of public money for the officer to have stopped and fined him, I mean.. bah! Sure , if the guy wants the laws changed, thats cool, we live in a democracy, go write to your MP. For now though the chap needs to realise he isn’t above the law and should abide by it (no doubt he’d whinge about a car running a red at 5.55am). Thank you, I am done now.</rant>

The advantage of living in the Netherlands, where everyone cycles, is that everyone is *used* to cyclists and everyone is *used* to the fact that cyclists are road users like everyone else and have to stick to the rules. Cyclists even have their own set of rules (which does not involve them being allowed to skip red lights 😉 ).

I’m particularly against cyclists being on pavements, haven’t they done their cycling proficency? It can be quite unnerving when walking to have them cycle past with very little warning. In Bristol there is quite a bit of confustion between what is pavement and what is cycle path due to poor layout and signing, making it awkward for all concerned. People should be encouraged to cycle as Mr Adams says, but to do so appropriately. I was pleasently surpised when in Glasgow to find that cyclists did actually use their bells to warn you they were there.

I think the analogy of a car running a red light at 5.55am is perfect. Too many cyclists don’t see themselves in the same way as car drivers and get pissed off when car drivers don’t treat them as they’d like.

If car drivers did half the shit many cyclists did they’d bloody get banned for dangerous driving! That is (of course) not to say that there are plenty of good cyclists out there.
