Its an odd concept, but then as many will inform you, I am odd.
Stressful overly busy day at work today, my flat is to damn hot (but then, most of the UK is) and it needed doing, so I built a pair of wheels (okay, I lie when I say pair, I’ve done one so far, I’ll do the other later on).
It is really quite a nice thing for me to do to wind down. May people find building wheels an impossibly fiddly complex stress inducing activity but for me, and I do not know why, I really enjoy it. There is something about taking a handful of spokes, a pot full of nipples, a rim and a hunk of Lancashire’s finest CNC work (aka a hope hub) and turing them into one of modern engineerings true marvels. On a strength to weigh ratio I’m told a well build wheel is the strongest structure known to man and given the hammering I give mine out on the trails, I can believe it!
What I need now is a trained ear to tell me which note all my spokes make (yes, they all make the same note) then i can buy a tuning fork and make sure I’m always consisant… perhaps thats going a little to far 😉 I’ll stick to feeling the stresses and using my judgment.
Right, on to the second wheel and then for a beer with peeps down the pub. Did someone say something about work? I’m sorry.. I can’t hear you! :p
